QLD:Qantas changes mixed for Qld: Bligh

Queensland Premier ANNA BLIGH says the Qantas announcement to base more activities
in Asia will mean more tourists for her state, but she doesn't like the idea of jobs being
cut in the airline.

Qantas chief executive ALAN JOYCE says the airline has to make fundamental changes
to ensure the international business is profitable, with its current cost base 20 per
cent higher than that of its key competitors.

He's announced the changes will cost one-thousand jobs.

Ms BLIGH says for Qantas to have a footprint in the fast growing markets of China and
India is good news for Queensland's tourist destinations like Cairns and the Gold Coast.

But pilots, engineers and others working for Qantas are dismayed, with one pilots union
accusing Mr JOYCE of spitting in the face of Australian families, and flushing safety
standards down the toilet.

NSW:Variety Bash off to flying start

SYDNEY, Aug 22 AAP - Cars disguised as mermaids, cupcakes and even a submarine have
left western Sydney for Byron Bay on the 26th annual NSW Variety Bash.

One hundred and eighteen pre-1974 cars departed from the B shed in Sydney Markets at
Flemington at 8.30am (AEST) on Sunday, organisers said.

Hundreds of people came out to cheer on the `Bashers', who include singer John Williamson
and V8 racing car driver Jamie Whincup.

The Bashers will travel through some of NSW's most remote regions and cross the border
into Queensland before completing the 3557km course at Byron Bay on Monday, August 30.

They will stop in locations including Temora, Cobar, Moree, Goondiwindi and Toowoomba,
where they will go sight-seeing and help out in the community.

The Bash, which traditionally starts and finishes at a destination starting with the
letter B, is held every year to raise money for children in need.

This year's Royal Australian Navy team is the biggest yet, with five cars and 11 personnel
taking part, team leader Lieutenant Commander Graeme `Soozie' Wong said.

The Navy's cars have been decorated to look like helicopters, ships and a submarine.

The Bash was started by businessman Dick Smith in June 1985 and since then has raised
more than $107 million for Variety, The Children's Charity.

Vic: Former police chief admits no contact during critical hours

Vic: Former police chief admits no contact during critical hours

By Edwina Scott

MELBOURNE, April 14 AAP - Victoria's former police chief has admitted she didn't speak
to anyone for three hours at a critical time on Black Saturday but says she had confidence
in the people delegated to manage the disaster.

While the state's death toll mounted, Christine Nixon had no telephone discussions
about the dire bushfire situation between 6pm and 9pm on February 7, it emerged on Wednesday.

Charged with coordinating the state's emergency response, Ms Nixon could not access
internet, radio, television or email during dinner with friends at her local pub in North
Melbourne, the inquiry heard.

She also kept a private appointment early that morning and worked on matters unrelated
to the bushfires despite statewide emergency preparations during the week for the horror
conditions forecast.

The packed the hearing room heard Ms Nixon's deputy, Assistant Commissioner Stephen
Fontana, worked tirelessly from 6am until about 1am the next day to keep emergency management
staff informed of developments across three control and coordination centres.

Mr Fontana said he received little instruction from Ms Nixon on the day but took charge
in his role.

Police had been "going non-stop" since about Australia Day in January, he said.

"We were on high alert the whole period," he told the commission.

The bushfires killed 173 people and decimated homes and businesses in 107 rural communities.

Ms Nixon's admission she had no access to media updates during the evening is at odds
with earlier evidence that she had gone home and monitored events from a variety of sources.

Fronting the bushfires royal commission for the second time, a defensive Ms Nixon faced
intense examination by counsel assisting the inquiry, Rachel Doyle, SC.

When she left the Integrated Emergency Coordination Centre (IECC) in a car driven by
Mr Fontana about 6pm, Ms Nixon was dropped home and then walked to the Metropolitan Hotel
for a casual meal with her husband and two friends, where she spent about 80 minutes,
but consumed no alcohol.

Ms Doyle suggested the omission was made deliberately to avoid embarrassment but Ms
Nixon told the hearing she had omitted to include the pub meal in her submission because
she didn't see any reason to explain it.

"I didn't think it was relevant," she told the commission.

"Whether I had a meal at home and prepared it myself or whether I had a meal otherwise
I didn't see as being important."

She said Mr Fontana and Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe were unaware of her dinner
date but said both knew they could call her at any time.

"People knew that I had a telephone and that they could contact me," she said.

But Ms Nixon, who repeatedly told the commission her phone was switched on during dinner,
did not take any telephone calls or receive text messages after leaving the IECC until
she took a call from police media director Nicole McKechnie at 8.56pm.

Ms Nixon said she couldn't have added any fresh thinking to the coordination effort
at the IECC, and stressed she had faith in the people delegated to perform their duties,
including Mr Walshe and Mr Fontana.

"Both of them are more experienced than I am in terms of emergency management procedures,"

she said.

"And that's why I put my faith in them to do that job.

"It was not my job to swoop in and take control...

"We were not the combat or responsible agencies, we were the coordinating agency..."

Ms Doyle said that the absence of Ms Nixon's driver, personal assistant, note-taker
or police uniform on February 7 and a table pre-booked for dinner all suggested Ms Nixon
was not prepared for active duty that day, a fact the former police chief has previously
confirmed.

"I believed that we had very good people there carrying out the responsibilities and
my role was to have put that all into place beforehand..." Ms Nixon said.

"I think all of us who were involved in the emergency management response have considered
our roles and obviously wondered whether we could have done things differently."

Shanda May Buy Ku6.com for Over USD45mn

SHANGHAI, Nov 27, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Shanda Interactive Entertainment Limited (Nasdaq: SNDA), a leading interactive entertainment media company in China, will buy up Chinese online video provider Ku6.com.

And persons in the know said that Ku6.com might make a stock merger at a price of USD 44 million with Hurray! Holding Co., Ltd. (Nasdaq: HRAY), a wireless service subsidiary under Shanda.

Whereas, an executive from one of the three parties revealed that the price was bound to surpass USD 45 million, but the executive did not give a detailed bid. The new company will be mainly engaged in Ku6.com's online videos, Shanda's music, and Hurry!'s wireless service.

The three parties have not confirmed the above information by now. Remarkably, Shanda will release a financial report on December 2, 2009, and the definite information is expected to be announced.

As of June 30, 2009, Hurry! had had cash and cash equivalents of USD 59.1 million in all. Besides, the price of the deal might hit around USD 60 million, unveiled people familiar with the matter.

NSW: Fourth ATM attack in Sydney in two days

NSW: Fourth ATM attack in Sydney in two days

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - Two more ATMs have been blown up in Sydney, taking to four the
number of attacks since Tuesday.

ATMs at Chester Hill, in the city's south-west, and Rhodes in the inner-west were targeted
in less than an hour early Thursday morning.

The attacks are the latest in a spate of ATM robberies across east coast states.

The blast at a bank at Rhodes at 1.05am (AEDT) occurred only 45 minutes after a similar
explosion at an ATM in Chester Hill.

The robbers at Rhodes escaped with a sum of cash, but the thieves got nothing in the
attack on the Chester Hill ATM.

That ATM was destroyed in the blast, but because it was not attached to shops, there
was no other damage.

The blast at Rhodes caused some damage to the Rider Boulevard building where it is located.

Witnesses reported seeing a dark-coloured Audi sedan leaving both crime scenes, police said.

No one was injured in either incident.

On Wednesday an ATM was blown up at Liverpool and on Tuesday another was destroyed at Ruse.

This week the NSW government offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to a
conviction for attacks on ATMs.

Earlier this month, Queensland, NSW and Victorian police launched a joint investigation
into possible links between more than two dozen explosive ATM robberies.

Anyone with information about any ATM robbery is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

QLD: Olympian asks for post-op pic

By Daniel Pace

SUNSHINE COAST, Qld, April 3 AAP - As she woke from heart surgery, Lisa Curry Kenny's
first request was for a family member to take her photograph.

The 45-year-old former Olympian broke down in tears outside her Sunshine Coast home
today when she fronted the media to tell of her traumatic experience, just three days
after undergoing an operation in a Brisbane hospital to implant a cardio-defibrillator.

"I remember saying 'Does anyone have a camera? I want you to get a picture of me in
hospital'," Curry Kenny told reporters.

"It's not often you're in surgery getting your heart worked on.

"It's all happened so quickly. I'm probably still in a bit of shock about it."

Curry Kenny had been suffering from an irregular heartbeat, a potentially life-threatening
condition known as myocarditis.

She revealed she first started feeling sick about two months ago when she was training
for next month's world solo long distance canoe championship in Hawaii.

"The news was at first devastating because it's what I do, be active and go out and
paddle in the ocean for four hours," she said.

"I just love it. (Now) I'm like a kid with my toy being taken away.

"At first I was really devastated and angry and upset, but at the same time, when I
look back I'm actually relieved that they've found it."

Overcome with emotion and flanked by her husband Grant Kenny and daughter Jaimi, Curry
Kenny broke down in tears shortly into her interview before regaining her composure.

"It's just something I never thought would happen to me," said the mother of three.

"I felt like I was wasting ambulance officers' time."

Curry Kenny said she was struggling to come to grips with the fact she'll never be
able to compete again and must temper her hectic lifestyle.

She has been ordered to rest for the next three months and can only do light exercise
once fully recovered.

"That's been the hardest thing for me because it's been my life," she said about competing.

"I knew that if you train through a virus that it could go to your heart ... but I
just never thought it would happen to me.

"I think most people are shocked as much as I am.

"I just didn't want to be one of those statistics where some fit and healthy person
drops dead of a heart attack and people wonder why."

Asked if she had trained too hard, Curry Kenny replied: "I always have. As a mother
and an athlete and you're working, you burn the candle at both ends.

"You don't often sit back and take a few days off because you can't.

"I was supposed to speak at a conference on Saturday and I feel bad because I let down 500 women.

"I was going down to try to inspire and motivate, but in this state of mind I can't
be like that. I can't do my job."

The chances of having a cardiac arrest due to her condition were small, but Curry Kenny
wasn't prepared to take that risk.

"I never wanted the kids to come home and find me carked out on the floor," she said.

"It wouldn't be a nice thing. The decision then was quite easy."

Curry Kenny said she wasn't feeling any pain from the defibrillator in her chest, but
still had breathing difficulties, a fractured rib and "soreness which radiates from my
sternum right up to my neck".

"All that on top of each other just makes it difficult to comprehend," she said.

"I'll get over it. I just have to get my head around it."

But she still retains her sense of humour.

"The doctors have said absolutely without a doubt the best thing I have to do for three
whole months is not cook or clean," she joked.

Curry Kenny swam at three Olympics and won seven Commonwealth Games gold medals.

Fed: Fiji task group returns home

By Max Blenkin, Defence Correspondent

CANBERRA, Dec 17 AAP - Australia's navy task group which had been standing off Fiji
returned home today, but units will remain on alert for dispatch to evacuate up to 7,000
Australians if the situation deteriorates in the South Pacific nation.

The welcome home was overshadowed by the loss of two soldiers killed when a Black Hawk
helicopter crashed while trying to land on HMAS Kanimbla on November 29.

Kanimbla docked in Townsville today to offload its force of helicopters, SASR contingent,
evacuee handling team and medical staff.

Task force commander Major General Ash Power, said the operation would be remembered
for the tragic loss of two young lives - helicopter pilot Captain Mark Bingley and Special
Air Service Regiment Trooper Josh Porter, whose body has not been recovered.

"Our thoughts, our sympathy and our support will continue to go out to the families
of Captain Bingley and Trooper Porter," General Power said.

"That was a very very sad occasion."

General Power said he and the 800 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel involved
in the task group were happy to be home.

"The operation was kicked off at very short notice so there wasn't that much time to
say farewell to families," he said.

"There was some uncertainty about the situation in Fiji and when they were going to
get home. So, to be home in time for Christmas, to be with their families and spend this
very special time, is a very important. They are very happy to be back."

The task force, including HMAS Kanimbla, frigate HMAS Newcastle and supply ship HMAS
Success sailed on November 2 to stand by off Fiji as the nation lurched towards a coup
by the Fijian military.

General Power said Defence remained ready to respond in the event of a deterioration
on Fiji over the Christmas-New Year period.

"This is our core business and evacuation operations have, unfortunately, become almost
routine," he said.

"We did this in Lebanon earlier this year and we have done it in the region in the
past. We will have forces postured over the Christmas break to respond if a contingency
does arise."

As part of the original deployment, a RAAF AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft was
sent to support the Task Group from a base in Pago Pago. The RAAF also maintained C-130
Hercules and Boeing 707 transport aircraft on standby in Sydney.

So far there has been no violence since the December 5 coup and commercial flights
to and from Fiji have continued without disruption.

HMAS Newcastle was due in Sydney today with the slower HMAS Success arriving later in the week.

The navy survey ship HMAS Melville remains off Fiji searching for the Black Hawk wreckage,
believed to be in waters up to 2.5 kilometres deep.

The navy said on Friday Melville appeared to have detected the helicopter's emergency
location beacon using a towed drone borrowed from the United States Navy.

Plastic piers protect against shipworms.

Researchers at the University of Maine, USA, have developed a new technique that uses FRPs to protect wooden piers and other marine structures from shipworm attack.

Over time, shipworms turn solid wood into a brittle honeycomb structure that eventually crumbles away, causing millions of dollars in damage to piers in ports and harbours worldwide. Engineering Professor Roberto Lopez-Anido hopes to reduce the problem by creating a glass fibre reinforced plastic shield that wraps around wooden piles used in piers and other marine structures. The FRP resists burrowing by the shipworms and is said to be durable in a marine environment.

Shipworms, also called termites of the sea, are not actually worms, but marine molluscs similar to clams. They have long, worm-like bodies with greatly reduced shells at the end. The floating larvae bore tiny holes on the surface of wood, and the adults use their shells to create larger tunnels inside the material. Damage is often discovered too late to do anything except replace the infected structures.

Lopez-Anido hopes his waterfront repair technology will be ready for commercialization in mid-2002.

Jan. 22 -- ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. -- Isle of Wight residents came to the Board of Supervisors meeting Thursday night to raise some Cain about some sludge.

But when more than 100 angry residents crammed into the county courthouse, they learned that there wasn't going to be any sludge-spreading.

But before you go off celebrating, said Danny Guy, one of the residents, let's make sure this doesn't happen again.

CDR Mid-Atlantic, a Pennsylvania company, planned to inject processed wastewater from Smithfield Foods on hundreds of acres of farmland in Isle of Wight and Surry counties, as well as in the city of Suffolk.

Millions of gallons of the sludge would have been spread about 6 to 8 inches below the surface.

CDR had applied to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for a permit to spread the sludge. But the company withdrew the application because of resistance from residents who live near the proposed sites.

The company spreads similar sludge in Prince George, Sussex and Chesterfield counties.

When folks living near the sites learned that the nitrogen-rich sludge could be near them, their land and their shallow wells, they wanted no part of it.

It'll smell, they said. And even though the DEQ said it wasn't harmful, they said, who knows what the effects could be over the years?

"If this stuff is so great," Isle of Wight resident Harry Walling said, "why are they giving it away, instead of selling it? Trade it for trash from up north or bring it to Third World countries, where they have trouble farming."

Guy and some of his neighbors collected more than 100 signatures on a petition to stop the DEQ from issuing the permit. The petitioners had planned to ask the board to do what it could to stop the permit.

The neighbors caused such a ruckus, CDR Mid-Atlantic withdrew its application "in light of current controversy surrounding the permit application," said a letter from Brent McManigal, district manager of CDR.

Hold on, Guy said: "They've withdrawn the application, but who's to say they won't apply again?"

Supervisor Henry Bradby agreed. Bradby asked that the administrative staff develop an ordinance that would prohibit sludge-spreading in Isle of Wight.

If the idea is defeated today and it comes back tomorrow, Bradby said, not a lot will be gained: "We need to have this on the books."

WISPA'S SIMPLE GUIDE TO BROADBAND OPTIONS.(News)

AN independent body dedicated to advising people and businesses about broadband options has been launched in Wales.

Wispa - Wales Internet Service Providers Association - is headed by Hywel Wiliam, who until recently was Ofcom's head of broadcasting and telecommunications in Wales.

He said: "The range of connectivity options can be confusing. There are advantages and disadvantages depending on where you are and how fast a connection you need."

Wispa has produced a simple options guide which includes the following: * Broadband connectivity over standard copper telephone lines is the most common form of internet access. Speeds depend on the distance to the telephone exchange and the type of broadband technology used over the copper line. Traditional telephone calls and broadband internet can be carried over the same copper line and you may see terms such as ADSL, SDSL which relate to the technology used to deliver the service. * Broadband connectivity supplied via a satellite dish is a good alternative for rural and/or remote locations. Speeds are improving, although latency - the time taken to receive signals from the satellite - can be noticeable if accessing real-time services such as iPlayer and Skype. * Companies may offer wireless hotspots in specific locations such as hotels, stations, pubs etc. These use the same wi-fi technology as in the home or office although the access point may be a little more robust than a home version. * Fibre Optic to the premises provides the highest speed connectivity service. It can be costly if taken as a dedicated service, but is very reliable, once installed.

Fibre Optic to the cabinet takes advantage of high-speed fibre optics being run to the cabinet, but then the connection reverts to copper wires to the home or business. This can be a hybrid alternative to the full fibre speed option offering speeds up to 40Mbps.

Mobile broadband uses the data connectivity capabilities of 3G, 3.5G and 4G Mobile services. Speeds are lower with older mobile services.

N[degrees] 20-2011: ALPHABUS READY TO OFFER NEW OPPORTUNITIES.

PARIS, France -- The following information was released by the European Space Agency:

Alphabus, the world's largest communication satellite platform, is ready to offer new opportunities for satellite operators worldwide. The platform was formally accepted for its first satellite, Alphasat I-XL on 16 June, marking an important milestone in its journey to space.

Meeting at the Paris Air and Space Show, Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, the industrial consortium behind Alphabus, together with ESA and the French space agency, CNES, announced that its technical requirements have all been met.

The platform provides unrivalled payload capacity to operators for commercial satcom missions and services such as fast Internet to remote locations, high-definition and 3D digital TV broadcast, and communication to mobiles.

In addition, the high-power platform offers opportunities for Europes' satcom industry and ESA to work together to develop cutting-edge technologies for new services such as air traffic management or security communications.

Taking benefit of available spare capacity on commercial satellites, hosted, or piggyback, payloads are an attractive proposition for operators, industry and public institutions like ESA to fly additional transponders, instruments or other applications.

Partners share the satellite platform, an arrangement that saves on the money and time to market, and promotes improved satcom technologies and services.

The first Alphabus satellite, Alphasat I-XL, developed in partnership with European operator Inmarsat, uses the platform's full potential.

Alphasat I-XL, planned for launch early 2013, carries a new generation of advanced geomobile L-band communications services across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. It also hosts four technology demonstration payloads developed through ESA's telecommunications and national programmes.

Alphabus has been developed by Astrium and Thales Alenia space under ESA-CNES cooperation.

"Such initiatives in partnership with satellite operators will foster the development of innovative technologies and services to serve the worldwide market and Europe's citizens new needs," said Magali Vaissiere, Director of ESA's Telecommunications and Integrated Applications, and Marc Pircher, Director of the CNES Space Centre Toulouse.

"Alphabus is a breakthrough for Europe's offering in the very large and high-power satellite market. Through its large capacity and versatility it is ideally suited to match the current and future demand of satellite operators, while allowing for additional hosted payloads." said Arnaud de Rosnay, Executive Vice President, Telecommunications Satellites of Astrium, and Emmanuel Grave, Executive Vice President Telecommunications of Thales Alenia Space.

34 KILLED IN SYRIAN UPRISING.(News)

A TOTAL of 34 people were killed in Syria yesterday during one of the largest anti-government protests seen in its 10-week uprising.

President Bashar Assad's forces renewed their assault on towns seen as key to the demonstrations calling for an end to his family's 40-year rule.

The regime also cut internet service across most of the country, a potentially dire blow for a movement that motivates people with graphic YouTube videos of the crackdown and loosely organises protests on Facebook pages.

The internet shutdown, if it continues, could also hamper the movement's ability to reach the world outside Syria, where the government has severely restricted the media.

An activist said: "It is a real massacre. It is terrorism, they want the people to stay silent."

MONKEY BUSINESS; NET CONMEN WILL SELL YOU A PUP Warning over exotic pet scam.(News)

Byline: KEITH FALKINER

LION cubs, tiger cubs and cute capuchin monkeys are just some of cuddly creatures being offered for sale on the internet - by scammers.

Crafty crooks are cashing in on an exotic pet craze by offering monkeys, lion and tiger cubs on popular Irish internet ad sites.

Conmen claim that for just a few hundred quid, ordinary punters can have their very own "King of the Jungle".

But gullible people who send their money by post to buy an exotic creature find the animal never arrives at their door.

Instead they are asked for more cash to cover "additional" fees invented by the scammers.

An Irish Sunday Mirror investigation has found scammers are operating openly on Irish free ad sites, where animals such as cute capuchin monkeys and tiger, lion and cheetah cubs can be bought for as little as EUR150 each.

The sellers claim to be based in counties Dublin, Offaly, Carlow, Cork and Kerry.

However when the Sunday Mirror made an enquiry about purchasing an animal, we were told by two different sellers - both of whom offered capuchin monkeys - that they were based in Spain and Cameroon respectively.

A woman in Spain, who had claimed she was based in Dublin in her ad, said a capuchin monkey would cost EUR200, including transportation.

She said: "I am looking for a good home and caring home for the monkeys because not enough time to spent [sic] with monkeys at home since I was posted to work in Spain.

"I work for the fight against HIV Aids and malaria that kill lot of people here OK. So I am out just to help because this is a voluntary job which does not have any salary, so I really need a good home that will care for my babies capuchin monkey OK."

The woman added that if we were to post her the money, she could send the monkeys "tomorrow".

The man from Cameroon offering to sell monkeys - who said he was based in Carlow - also claimed to be a doctor, working with people with malaria.

But gardai warned internet users they should not send money by post unless they know exactly who they are dealing with.

A spokesman said: "We are seeing an increasing number of these scams, mostly operating out of Africa, and people should be wary not to deal with them.

"They have various ways of trying to get people to part with their money and exotic animals is just another one of those methods."

Meanwhile, the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has called for stronger laws on keeping exotic pets.

A spokesman said: "There are a number of very real risks associated with such unregulated growth in the numbers of such animals, not least a very real threat to public safety."

The new Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has told the Dail that a new Animal Health and Welfare Bill will make the law far more strict on exotic animals.

He said: "The Programme for Government 2011 includes a commitment to amend and strengthen animal welfare legislation.

"A draft Animal Health and Welfare Bill is in the course of preparation."

VASCO Data Security Extends its PKI-Based Product Line with DIGIPASS KEY 200 and DIGIPASS KEY 860.

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. and ZURICH, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- VASCO Data Security Inc. (Nasdaq: VDSI; http://www.vasco.com/ ), a leading software security company specializing in authentication products today announced that it is extending its PKI-based product line with two new authenticators: DIGIPASSA' KEY 200 and DIGIPASSA' KEY 860. DIGIPASS KEY 200 is a USB device with a PKI smart card and secure USB mass storage on a single device. DIGIPASS KEY 860 is a smart card ID device, an OTP authenticator and secure USB storage in one.

DIGIPASS KEY 200 is best suited for use in corporate environments and can be used for local and remote access to the corporate network and applications, the use of PKI for encryption and digital signature and mobile data security. It combines PKI technology, secured mass storage and the possibility to integrate RFID technology for physical access.

DIGIPASS KEY 860 is adapted for banking environments: it helps banks to comply with more stringent financial regulations (Sarbanes-Oxley, Basel II, HIPAA) and enhanced security requirements. It combines OTP technology with PKI and also offers secured mass storage and offers new opportunities to effectively combat phishing and man-in-the-middle attacks.

PKI functionality

Both DIGIPASS KEY 200 and DIGIPASS KEY 860 offer PKI-based digital signature for e-mails or transactions, encryption capability and strong authentication for PKI-enabled operating systems, VPNs and application. They both combine the security of a smart card with the flexibility of a card reader, allowing the user to generate and securely store digital certificates from any Certificate Authority on the device. The generation of private and public keys is managed on the devices and the keys cannot be exported from the smart card on the devices. Both devices can be used in conjunction with DIGIPASS CertiID, VASCO's PKI-based client software suite and can be integrated within any application supporting PKCS#11, MS CAPI standards and CNG.

OTP functionality

DIGIPASS KEY 860 offers device-based OTP generation: with one push on the button of the DIGIPASS KEY 860, an OTP will be generated on the screen of the authenticator. The user will type the OTP into the log-on screen on the PC to access the application.

When combining the use of PKI with OTP, customers will need to install VASCO's authentication server technology (VACMANA' Controller or IDENTIKEYA') to offer event and time based OTP capability next to PKI-functionality.

DIGIPASS KEY 200 offers smart card based OTP generation through the use of DIGIPASSA' CertiID.

Secure USB Storage

Nowadays employees often carry sensitive corporate information on portable USB drives. These data are freely accessible and the USB devices can easily be lost or stolen. With DIGIPASS KEY 200 and DIGIPASS KEY 860 sensitive corporate data can be encrypted and stored on the authenticator. For secure storage, user transparent on fly encryption technology is used by both devices: the encryption keys are created on installation and the user will access the sensitive data on the encrypted partition using his PIN. Devices are available with a storage capacity of 2, 4 or 8 Gb.

Both DIGIPASS KEY 200 and DIGIPASS KEY 860 can have three pre-defined memory partitions: a partition with CD-ROM capability, an encrypted partition and a non-secure hard disc partition. On the CD-ROM enabled partition specific software can be stored. For instance banks can store a secured browser on it, this way banking customers will always be directed to the right URL when connecting their USB-authenticator. The information on this partition cannot be altered; as a result customers are protected from phishing and man-in-the-middle attacks. The encrypted partition can be used for secure data storage. For instance in the insurance world a policy could be put on the encrypted partition, the insured can sign it using PKI-based e-signature and would be able to access it for consultation in a later stage on the encrypted partition. The non-secured partition, allows the user to store accessory, non-confidential information.

"VASCO has extended its PKI-based offering, not only were we able to combine OTP and PKI functionality on a single device, we are also able to respond to other growing security needs such as mobile data security, locking of workstations, disc and data encryption. With all new features we are able to offer more functionality to our customers, such as zero foot print deployment or secure browser capability on the device and the combination of logical and physical access for corporate environments," says Jan Valcke, President and COO at VASCO Data Security.

Politics.

Israel intensified its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip, sending ground forces to the outskirts of the main urban areas as aircraft attacked suspected Hamas fighters, weapons dumps, rocket-firing positions and arms-smuggling tunnels. After 12 days of fighting, more than 650 Palestinians had been killed, many of them women, children and non-combatants, for the loss of seven Israelis. The deaths of more than 30 Palestinians, mostly children, by shells near a UN school, added urgency to diplomacy seeking to bring about a ceasefire.

John Atta Mills was sworn in as Ghana's new president after a wafer-thin victory in a run-off against the former ruling party's candidate. The smooth transition after so close a race, in stark contrast to the violence and acrimony last year that disfigured elections in Kenya and Zimbabwe, boosted Ghana's reputation as one of Africa's more successful countries.

Ethiopia began withdrawing its troops from Somalia two years after invading it in response to a perceived threat from militant Islamists. But with Somalia's transitional government as weak as ever and a residual force of African Union peacekeepers threatening to leave as well, a power vacuum may be filled again by Islamist militias.

Staying in Santa Fe

Bill Richardson withdrew his nomination as America's commerce secretary, a ripple in Barack Obama's hitherto smooth selection of administration officials. New Mexico's governor is under investigation for awarding a state contract to a political donor, raising questions about why Mr Obama chose him for the job in the first place.

Mr Obama also took some flak for asking Leon Panetta to head the CIA. Some intelligence wonks doubted if Mr Panetta, who was chief of staff and budget director under Bill Clinton, has the right background for the job. And Democrats on the Senate intelligence committee said they had been kept in the dark about the nomination. Joe Biden, the vice-president-elect, called this "a mistake".

The convening of the 111th Con gress foundDemocrats in a tizzy over whether to seat Roland Burris as a senator from Illinois. Mr Burris was sent to Washington by Rod Blagojevich, Illinois's scandal-tainted governor. Mr Blagojevich allegedly tried to sell the seat, made vacant by Barack Obama's election to the presidency. Legal wrangling in Minnesota over spoiled and absent ballots kept one of that state's Senate slots unfilled.

California's fiscal crisis worsened when negotiations failed between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democrats in the state Assembly over the budget. The legislators sent a bill to the governor anyway, which he promptly vetoed.

On the (crowded) agenda

Cuba's president, Raul Castro, said he was willing to talk to Barack Obama, but only on a basis of equals. Mr Castro recently presided over low-key ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution.

Chile's government unveiled a $4 billion bundle of measures aimed at creating 100,000 jobs and helping poorer families. In Mexico, the government said it would freeze petrol prices and provide cash for struggling industries and the unemployed.

Masked gunmen opened fire and threw a grenade at the studios of Televisa, Mexico's largest television company, in the northern city of Monterrey, during the evening news. They left a message warning Televisa to "stop reporting only about us, also report about the narco-officials". At least 5,700 people died in drug-related violence in Mexico last year.

Closing in

After a lengthy and bloody campaign, the Sri Lankan army captured the northern town of Kilinochchi, the administrative headquarters of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, and said its forces were continuing to advance towards remaining Tiger strongholds. There were three bomb explosions in Colombo, which were blamed on the rebels.

In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wajed of the Awami League was sworn in as prime minister for the second time, following her alliance's landslide victory in an election.

India 's prime minister, Manmohan Singh, accused Pakistani state agencies of involvement in the attack on Mumbai last November that killed more than 170 people. India handed over a dossier to Pakistan which it said contained evidence of the involvement of Pakistani terrorist organisations in the attack. Pakistan accused India of point-scoring.

China 's government launched a campaign to purge the internet of vulgar and pornographic content. It cited 19 websites, including Google and Baidu, China's leading internet search-engine, for failing to obey requests to block offensive material. There were fears the campaign might also be used by the authorities as an excuse to block online political dissent.

The owner of a nightclub in Bangkok was charged with negligence after a fire on New Year's Eve in which at least 64 people died.

In Cambodia 's capital, Phnom Penh, tens of thousands of people gathered to mark the 30th anniversary of the toppling of the Khmers Rouges by a Vietnamese invasion. As many as 2m people died during the group's four-year rule.

An unwelcome tradition

The annual gas dispute between Ukraine and Russia escalated sharply after the Russians decided to shut off all gas supplies. Several countries in south-eastern Europe quickly ran short of gas; even Germany and Italy were hit. A delegation from the European Union flew to Moscow to urge the two sides to reach a deal.

In a sign of growing autocracy, Azerbaijan banned foreign companies from broadcasting on national frequencies, shutting off groups such as the BBC and Voice of America.

Turkey arrested at least another 30 people suspected of involvement in a coup plot, including some retired generals and a former police chief. Some 86 people have already been charged.

France's president, Nicolas Sarkozy, proposed sweeping judicial reforms, including the abolition of independent investigating magistrates first brought in by Napoleon. Mr Sarkozy wants the police and state prosecutors to take over the magistrates' role, as in many Anglophone countries.

Heartbroken teen told ex he was going to kill himself; Inquest hears final internet chat ended with suicide threat.(News)

Byline: Lauren Taylor

A TEENAGER was found hanged shortly after telling his ex-girlfriend he was going to kill himself, an inquest into one of the latest youths to die in Bridgend's apparent suicide cluster heard yesterday.

Nathaniel Pritchard, 15, had been in a relationship with the girl for eight months but it had recently ended, the inquest in Merthyr Tydfil was told.

Nathaniel, of Ystrad Fawr, Cefn Glas, Bridgend, had been in Bridgend town centre with his sister Mellissa on February 13, Detective Inspector Jason Redrup said. In the early evening, he had a conversation with his ex-girlfriend on his computer, using instant messaging service MSN, and she told him she was seeing another boy.

Insp Redrup said Nathaniel ended the conversation by telling the girl to go off with her new boyfriend, adding, "I'm going to kill myself and it will be your fault."

The inquest heard that Nathanielwent to his bedroomin the loft of the house. When his ex-girlfriend called him on the telephone a short time later, his younger brother Connor took the phone upstairs, where he found him hanged.

Nathaniel's parents cut him down and he was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, where he was put on a life support machine.

He died on February 15, the same day his cousin Kelly Stephenson was found hanged while on holiday in Kent. An inquest into her death was opened and adjourned on Thursday.

Bridgend Coroner Philip Walters said the provisional cause of Nathaniel's death was multiple organ failure and hanging.

Earlier this week Nathaniel's parents appeared at a police press conference, blaming media reporting for what happened to their son.

An inquest was yesterday also opened into the death of 16-year-old Jenna Parry, who was found hanged in Cefn Cribbwr on Tuesday. Her death brought the total number of young people from the area thought to have killed themselves since January 2007 to 17.

Insp Redrup said Jenna, who had also recently split from her partner, had a history of self harm and had previously attempted to take her life at least twice by attempting to take overdoses.

Insp Redrup said, "She had recently split from her boyfriend and found it difficult to accept that. She struggled to rekindle the relationship."

He addedthat Jenna had been taking cannabis and prescribed drugs. Hanging was given as a provisional cause of death.

Both inquests were adjourned to be concluded at a later date.

Meanwhile, it also emerged yesterday that online memorial pages dedicatedto theBridgend teenagers have been closed to prevent the possibility of copycat deaths.

The tribute website Gonetoosoon.co.uk said that it was removing the messages posted in memory of the youngsters.

The website allows people to set up a memorial page for a loved one with information about them and a photo. People are invited to view the page and to leave their own message of condolence. The site, created two years ago, hosts 25,000 memorials.

In recent weeks the site has been popular for parents and friends of the apparent suicide victims. The site's creators said they had to act responsibly following the 17 recent deaths in the South Wales borough.

Terry George, who founded and created the site, said, "There's been lots of speculation that some of these suicides could be related to the glamorisation of people having websites in the event of their suicide. We justwantedto err on the side of caution if there was any possibility whatsoever that this could be anything to do with it, thatwe didn'twant tobe condoning it. I don't feel that we're glamorising the dead, we've never had a situation like this before."

Three in for 3G licences.(MOROCCO)(Brief article)

Three companies are set to be awarded by late July licences for third-generation (3G) services by telecoms regulator Agence Nationale de Reglementation des Telecommunications (ANRT).

The two GSM incumbents, Meditel, a joint venture of Spain's Telefonica and Portugal Telecom, and Maroc Telecom, the local subsidiary of France's Vivendi Universal, are in line to take two of the licences. The third, which is exclusively for 3G services, is set to be awarded to the local Maroc Connect. Four companies submitted bids by 14 July for the licences. The other bidder was Nejma Telecom Maroc, a subsidiary of Kuwait's Wataniya. The winners will pay a fee of MD 360 million ($41.6 million) as a contribution towards technical fees (MEED 12:5:06). Maroc Connect in mid-July awarded a contract to China's ZTE to supply the technology for a new nationwide telecoms network offering enhanced voice and data services. The network will deploy all-internet-protocol code division multiple access 2000 technology. The solution, which is intended to offer vocoder savings, savings on transmission costs and improved voice quality will take three years to develop. ZTE announced in April that it was the first telecom equipment provider with the capability to deploy the new technology for commercial use worldwide.

Win the Consumers' Beverage of Choice.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., March 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Spirits International Prestige (SIP) Awards takes a fresh approach to beverage competitions by linking producers to the people who matter the most - the consumers. The contest organizers invite all producers of alcoholic spirit beverages to submit entries for the annual consumer-judged awards competition. The SIP Awards were instituted in 2009 to celebrate the diversity and high quality of spirits and to recognize the best of the best in an effort to generate unbiased and impartial acknowledgment.

The SIP Awards are different from similar competitions because they use consumer judges instead of industry professional judges. "We wanted to find out which spirit brands would come out on top if all of the hype and marketing were taken out of the equation," says Paul Hashemi, executive producer of the SIP Awards. They remain steadfast in their goal of providing one of the most reliable measures of beverage quality in the world. By working directly with educated and impartial consumers, The SIP Awards has established a completely merit-based awards system that effectively levels the playing field for beverage producers, both seasoned and new.

Spirits entered in the competition will be judged in a blind tasting that is strictly based on the characteristics of aroma, taste, and finish. By winning a bronze, silver, gold, or platinum SIP Award, a brand is empowered and transformed into the consumers' choice for its spirit category. In 2010, 162 brands entered in the global competition, with 29 receiving platinum medals. The consumer judging panel stripped away the layers of elaborate marketing, brand recognition, price point disparity, and most importantly, the bias of established judges, to reward the brands that are truly the best in class.

Winners of the SIP Awards will also receive exclusive exposure through Internet media, social networking sites, television, and print publicity campaigns. Brands that win SIP Awards are distinguished as a preferred brand by consumers, which strengthens the brand to rise to new heights in marketing and sales. Beverage industry media partners offer special promotions extended only to SIP Award medal winners, which further contributes to their public relations activities.

A SIP Award medal is an accomplishment that speaks volumes to the general public. "Winning a platinum SIP Award is a wonderful affirmation that has allowed us to creatively market our 360 Double Chocolate Vodka directly to the consumer market," said Stephanie Parsons, marketing manager of Earth Friendly Distilling.

The SIP Awards is sponsored by the most well-known industry publications, such as Bar Business Magazine, Nightclub & Bar Magazine, Chilled Magazine, Food & Beverage Magazine, Modern Distillery Age, Mutineer Magazine, DrinkedIn, Proof66 and DrinkMe Magazine. As an international competition, the SIP Awards' reach is far and wide and, as such, a portion of all proceeds is annually donated to the American Red Cross.

The deadline for entering the SIP Awards competition is May 2, 2011. For entry forms and information on the upcoming competition, please visit http://www.sipawards.com/ or call Sara Walker at 1-888-254-1764.

Cox Announces Five Finalists for Virginia's 2011 Cox Conserves Heroes Program.

$10,000 to be donated to local environmental nonprofits; online voting through April 4

CHESAPEAKE, Va., March 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications, in partnership with The Trust for Public Land (TPL), today announced finalists for Virginia's 2011 Cox Conserves Heroes program.

The winning Hero, to be chosen by an online public vote, will be awarded $5,000 to donate to the environmental nonprofit of his or her choice. The four finalists each will receive $1,250 to donate to their nonprofits of choice.

The public is being asked to vote now through April 4 at CoxConservesHeroes.com. Videos featuring the finalists and their conservation projects will help voters learn more about each individual. Virginia's 2011 Cox Conserves Hero will be announced in mid April.

The five finalists and their environmental nonprofit of choice are as follows:

Chris Clifford

Due to Clifford's efforts, Gloucester residents have new fields and park amenities to enjoy. He helped construct fifteen athletic fields at local schools and parks, as well as a park entrance road and a wildlife habitat pond. Environmental Nonprofit of Choice: Park Partners, Inc.

Dan Baxter

Due to Baxter's commitment, the Clean Community Commission's Helping Hands program is beautifying Virginia Beach. In one year alone, he volunteered 250 hours to ensure that Virginia Beach remains a livable, beautiful, clean community. Environmental Nonprofit of Choice: Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission

Lillie Gilbert

For more than a decade, Gilbert has been championing outdoor recreation opportunities. Her extensive outdoor knowledge also led to the creation of educational signage to engage visitors. Environmental Nonprofit of Choice: Lynnhaven River Now

Thomas Guss

What began as an Eagle Scout project to cleanup litter became a labor of love for Guss. Through the planting of 1,000 pine seedlings, his project provides a natural filter for rainwater runoff into Chatham Pond and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The treeline restoration also increases beautification and provides a wildlife habitat to many small creatures. Environmental Nonprofit of Choice: Newport News Green Foundation

Charlie Harrelson

Harrelson is the driving force behind preserving Pleasure House Point, the last undeveloped land on the Lynnhaven River Watershed. In addition to his grassroots efforts, he has conducted extensive water quality and habitat research and recruited fellow students to help protect the area. Environmental Nonprofit of Choice: Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Foundation

"These nominations reflect a wide variety of conservation and educational programs by impressive community volunteers. The environmental heroes through the Cox Conserves Heroes program are collectively doing great things for the environment in the region. And we are so very proud to put forward this effort in support of the many initiatives being honored," says Gary McCollum, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Cox Virginia.

Cox Conserves Heroes Judges

The finalists were selected by a distinguished judging panel of local leaders. They were challenged with reviewing a very wide field of nominees and selecting the top applicants based on their contributions to the preservation and protection of the environment.
