Qld: Doctor performed botched operations: Kelly

The Queensland government has been accused of ignoring allegations a doctor performed
unauthorised operations resulting in complications at a hospital in the state's north.

North Queensland Nationals MP DEANNE KELLY told Federal Parliament last night .. an
Egyptian-trained doctor at the Mackay Base Hospital did three major surgical operations
.. unsupervised .. in 2004.

The Courier-Mail reports the doctor performed botched keyhole surgery .. performed
a procedure in a ward which should've been done in an operating theatre .. and claimed
the cause of a post-operative complication was the result of a cow kicking a patient.

Ms KELLY says the state government did nothing to address the issue when it was brought
to its attention.

But Health Minister STEPHEN ROBERTSON denies the claims.

He's told ABC radio the Mackay district and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
have been working together since the College brought the claims forward.
